“I can stand the rains from the dark sky, not the flow from your blue eyes, Ammalu”
“My eyes are not blue, my eyes may generate fire at time, at you but never water.
And SP GAru, there is neither fire nor rain in your poetry”
—————————————-
“Honesty. What Ammalu? Honesty. I’m that in physical form”
“I’m aware”
“If you are aware, go and tell everyone. Your mom, my friends, your friends”
“Sorry, I can’t do that. I can’t tell a lie. Truth. What SP? Truth. I’m that in physical form”
—————————-
“You should be proud that I’m your husband and all your friends respect me”
“I’m proud that you are my husband”
“And about your friends’ respect for me?”
“That comes next. Do I respect you? The answer is already in the first part-. ‘I’m proud’”
“Why don’t you be liberal with your praises for me?”
“You are my husband”
“You have become stingy now, with your words”
“No, I have said all about you”
——————————–
“Ammalu, you know who I’m for the world outside?”
“I know only one world and there are only two people in that. You and me and you are mine. I’m nether aware of any other world nor interested too”
————————————
“Ammalu, a woman should have only one husband but a man can have twenty wives”
“Have forty, who question you ? But tell a word to my mom”
“If I can talk to her, do you think I would have mentioned to you?”
“Then keep quiet and sit on this Sevai machine. I have no strength to press it”
“I too have no strength, Ammalu”
“And you want to have twenty women!”
——————————————
“Oh, the gem among women, Ammalu, are you going to become mother again?”
“Worried?’
“Not me, our sons and daughter. Will they pet their own babies or our babies?”
‘Did you say babies?”
“Yes, if it happens to be twins”
“You are liberal not only in words, but in thoughts too. I love you for that”
“Thank you. Love’s application is limited”
“Yes, for the time being!”
“What!!!!!!”
“Man lives on hopes”
“And woman too?”
“Yes, woman too”
“An yellow robe and some little cash, please”
—————–
“Ammalu, ask for anything as my advance gift for the New Year”
“Why this unprecedented gesture?”
“Just like that. Want to be liberal why welcoming 2015”
“I know how liberal you could go. Get me one pack of Injimittai – ginger candy”
“How much does it cost ?”
———————————-
“Ammalu, the Government central or State is likely to issue a postal stamp recognizing my contribution to the society. I can recommend your head too, to be included in the stamp, if you improve the quality of your service to me”
“An authority bigger than Central and State, has already issued a stamp carrying my head and foolishly I stuck it to the wall of your heart. The old- time glue was so strong, that I’m unable remove my head despite many efforts. One stamp is too many, NSP”
“NSP? Why that prefix ‘N’?”
“No Stamp Please”
————————-
“Ammalu, suggest a New Year Promise, a really hard one. Right now, here in your presence, I will take oath and announce my decision”
“Speak truth. A really hard one for you”
“No problem. Get an aspirin tablet please. Severe head ache. I need rest”
“Really severe?”
“Yes. get a Masal dosa and four iddlies please too. Of course, a cup of hot coffee will help to reduce the head pain”
“Hungry too ?”
“Terribly hungry”
” excellent. Your New Year Promise has started working. Congrats”
“I’m yet to take the oath! You’re lying Ammalu”
“No, I’m not. I too have a New Year Promise”
“What?”
“Speak truth”
————————-
“I thought your mom would visit us with a solid gift for the New year”
“She has sent it in a bullock cart. It should reach us now. She will meet you later”
“Really? She is my best mother in law. Let us give her a solid welcome for coming with a solid gift”
” yes, you too keep four solid men for unloading the load and take it to our back yard?”
“Why to backyard, Ammalu? The bundle could be old coins, silver and brass vessels . She might be having some copper vessels too”
“No, it is a granite wet grinder she inherited from her mother and an iron pounding unit, both with equally strong pestles”
“Mad woman ! Who wants those? I will return, through the same cart”
“You can do that, by paying to and fro cartage and loading and unloading charge, about 1200 Rs”
“What gift is this, Ammalu?”
“Solicited Solid gift”
——————————
“Ammalu, tell your mom, that SP didn’t become a big man because I married her daughter”
“She never said that. You are misinformed. To my knowledgejan, she said, ‘SP became a moderately refined man after he married Ammalu’”

Challenges
Challenges are there everywhere, for every one, human, animal, bird or insect. In every walk of life. On the land, in the water or from the space,
One has to be always prepared to accept challenges. That doesn’t mean, you should screw up your mustache, stand at the front gate, with a big knife to strike the enemy when he attacks.
It means, first, have knowledge of general nature and sound knowledge on the subject you are dealing with. This is to ensure that ignorance should not be the cause of your failure.
Then comes courage. Knowledge can be bought, acquired, but not courage. You have to develop it within yourself, to help which, knowledge can be one of your tools. Failures can be another tool, if used efficiently. Belief in God or Destiny could also be a tool, if not misused.
Then comes the most important part. Think cool, analyze the problems, arrive at a decision. Use any tool, books, friends, intelligence, experience, anything, but your cool mind, your decision and sir, your Fate will guide you to find a solution,
You are the king, if you have come over the problems. If you have not, use all the tools and be prepared to face the next problem. If you lose heart and sit in a corner, you are creating a problem for that corner. It will -
Love by love
Paying back love by love
————-
“Your face is familiar. Aren’t you Kuppuswamy’s daughter? We call him Kuppu”
“No, uncle. I’m Appuswamy’s wife, I call him Up”
“My son’s name too is that. But, we don’t call him Up”
“He is never up from bed before noon, right?”
“Right. How do you know?”
“I told you that he is my hubby. If not wife, who else will know hubby’s wake up time, unless he sleeps in another woman’s house?”
“To my son, to my own son, you are married?”
“Yes uncle. I told you that already”
“Don’t say that you are my daughter in law”
”I won’t. Option yours to designate your son’s wife”
“Stop talking nonsense”
“To have a son is a nonsense, uncle?”
“Talking about My son?”
“No. My son; from your son”
“Absolutely unacceptable”
‘Why uncle? He is not a man?”
“He is. But, he didn’t take my permission to marry you?”
“One needs permission to select his woman? Did your Krishna or Arjuna took permission ?”
“I sweated to make him what he is today”
“Fix the reward. I will give a cheque right now ”
“Repaying love by cash?”
“Ok. We will repay love by love. Please come home and take charge of our baby till we return from our pleasure trip”
“Let me ask my son’s mom”
“Your wife? You need permission from your wife to meet your grandson? The old lady is already there”
“She didn’t take my permission”
“She is your son’s mom, uncle”
“Yes, you said it. I’m proud of her”
“I know, you are. Let us go” -
Aswagantharishtam, last dose

“Ammalu, come closer; the walls have ears”
“That is a news. The walls were duff yesterday when you yelled at me”
“You were dumb, yesterday. Now you have become eloquent. The walls have gone deaf today. Things change, you see.
Hear this. A rich lady became old and–”
“That is news again- rich ladies too, turn old ? Continue; waiting to hear your story”
“This is between we, two. She has plenty of money and a pretty daughter”
“It is not between we, two. There are four people now in the picture and plenty of money”
“Yes, the old lady wants to hand over her money and daughter, both to me”
“That is again another news. Never heard of any old ladies interested in handing over their money, though not unheard of their handing over their daughters to oldies like you. But that was long ago, when daughters didn’t know karate”
“Shall I show you the written commitment from her?”
“No need. I trust your words. Does the old lady knows you well, your past, present, your name, your fame?”
“Yes, she does”
“And she wants to hand over her money and daughter to you?”
“Yes, yes”
“Money is plenty and the girl is pretty?”
“Yes, yes, yes”
“No going back?”
“No, no, no. She is bent upon doing it having convinced of my honesty. What do I do?”
“If she is bent upon doing it, I have no say.
Accept both. Deposit the money in my account. Send the daughter to a good school.
When the time comes, we will perform her marriage. The balance amount, we will hand over to her”
“The money and the girl given to me belong to me and for my use”
“Then do one thing. I will give a small money now. Buy a bottle of AswagandhArishtam, from the nearest Kottakal AryavaudyasAlA shop.
After dinner for seven nights, face east and pour a teaspoon- full of that dark liquid into your mouth, without it touching your tongue. On the eighth day morning, you will getup as an young man of twenty or twenty one at the most, possessing the energy and speed of a race horse.
Go straight to that rich old lady’s house, collect the money and girl and bring home. Hand over the money to me and you keep the girl with you”
“If the girl knows karate?”
“Enjoy the company of Apsara girls, high up. We both will enjoy the money, down here, in the Earth”
“If the rich old lady comes and asks for her assets back?”
“I will hand over the remaining Aswagantharishtam to her. She will acquire the strength of a race horse in seven days when I will give back her assets and we three will live happily”
“Old lady, you were a nice woman a week ago; now you have turned into an animal”
“AswagandhArishtam, last dose!” -
Ammalu is always right
Worth worshipping Plum! may I talk to you in confidence?”
“Go ahead, Gentleman Gem”
“A girl whom I loved casually long ago and who loved me deeply long ago, has sent me a message”
“Soory, Gem. The seal of confidentiality goes, ‘fut’. Ammalu has her bio data”
“I don’t believe”
“You don’t believe? She is 5’3″ tall, wheat complexion, four children and eight grand children, black hair big zero, teeth three tilting and three threatening to jump. She stopped being a girl seventy years ago”
“Wah! if you have so much information, how much your daughter won’t have?”
“You are right. My sweet daughter aka your sweet wife, knows no such girl existed and you are bluffing”
———-
Your Majesty and my MIL, see this mail from an old girl friend. You will weep!”
“Give me a minute please. Let me collect a paper napkin. OK. go ahead”
“Had I married you SP,
Dub, dub down my BP.
Had you been my hubby
Gold teeth for my puppy.
Had u not chosen a doll of clay
With zero marks in love play
You would have been on cloud nine
Me, inside a gold mine! ”
What do you say, woman of no woes?”
“Sheer showcasing of stupidity! None other than you would have written such
Silly, shameful, sorrowfully foul smelling four liners . Vanish from my eyes if you don’t want me to vanquish you”
“Wah! What an exposition! What an eloquence! Were you reading my stories, watermelon?”
————————-
Mother in law, tell me one reason, why I should obey my wife?”
“Only one reason ?”
“Yes”
“She is your wife and not husband”
——————————–
“Mother in law! You are the eldest in our family now.
You decide whether, I should stay in our house or your daughter. There is place only for one”
“Will you accept my decision?”
“Yes, MIL, the great!”
“Your problem is that there is place only for one in your house?’
“Yes, MIL, the supreme !”
“I will go and stay there. You both come and stay here, in my house”
“MIL, you are great; you are supreme. You be where you are. We will continue to be where we are”
“Space problem ?”
“It is our problem. We will solve it”
———————————–
“Big plum, your daughter has become greedy these days. Yesterday, she asked for some plastic dabbas for storing things. I collected a doz. from Abdu’s second hand stop. Ten had no lids. She made me to walk a mile in the hot sun, to bring lids. When I got the lids, she wants stuff to fill the dabbas! I can’t manage her. Keep that greedy lady here. She will be a good companion for you”
“What will I do with her, SP ?”
“I will get a baby feeding bottle from Abdu’s shop. Fill milk and give her. She will lie in a corner sipping”
“Why don’t you do that?”
“You don’t know her, MIL. If I buy a baby feeding bottle, she will ask for a nipple for that”
“Buy a bottle with nipple, may be from a regular shop, not from second – hand goods seller”
“Then that greedy will ask for a baby!”
———————
“Ammalu, your mom tells me that it was written in your horoscope that you would marry a Superman”
“She didn’t tell you the whole story. That was what she thought. When things turned topsy – turvy, she consulted the same astrologer who cast my horoscope and he clarified, there was a spelling mistake, which crept inadvertently in the horoscope.
I was to marry a duper man and not a Superman. The damage, by that time, was already done. My marriage was over.”
——————
“Namasthe, nAnamma!”
“NAnamma ? When did I give birth to you father, son in law?”
“Just for the beauty of word- alignment. Going for a Christmas party. Just came to say hello to you. May return tomorrow, may not return tomorrow”
“Oh, now I understood. You are not going to party, but returning from the party. Come with me, Grand son. Sit under that tree near the cowshed and enjoy the breeze from the Neem tree”
“COWSHED? Nanamma, Kyom? You want me to remove the shit and give that old lady in the birthday suit, a cold water bath? ”
“Gopalan will do that. You will simply sit there doing nothing, till the cow dung smell completely covers the foul party smell. I will call then Ammalu and hand you over to her”
“Gracious grand lady, how to get rid of the cow dung smell?”
“That is my daughter’s job. She will treat you in such a way that you will never think of going for the next ten Christmas parties”
—————————–
“When is your birthday, Ammalu?”
“The first husband in the world to ask that question !”
“Pardon my memory lapse, kind lady. . In fact, I don’t even remember my own birthday”
“I can verify that date from the records”
“The first woman in the world to say so to her husband!
Which record are you going to verify, my SSLC book”
“Your school records are not very reliable, says mom. The other day, she casually
found that 35 % average in the third attempt, in SSLC, merited you to fetch a gold medal, which you claim to be yours many times!”
“Ammalu, during those days, minimum pass mark was 15%, second class 20%, first class 30% and 35% was the cut off mark for gold medal”
“No wonder why your English and Maths are so poor!”
“Yes”
—————————-
“Ammalu, I have composed an eulogy on the eldest lady of our clan.
Let us go this evening and dedicate it to her?”
“Your poem is in Tamil or MalayAlam?”
“In English”
“My mom can’t follow English?”
“Don’t fool me. Here is a poem, she composed and presented to me, last evening, along with her Christmas gift
‘Rubbish a boasting hubby
Never his gift of ruby.
Ruby a day, baby for X-mas
Welcome the stuff, not his bluff’
“OMG! Proud of my mom”
—————————-
“NamaskAram, mAmiyar. I have decided to drop all my English connections from the near year. Otherwise, I would have addressed u ‘hei, old plum!”
“Hei, Gem! New year is yet to arrive. Anyway I want to retain my English friendship to read your cranky verses you call poems”
“An assault on my love for that language, mom!”
“So, you too are with me! You can’t stop loving English. I can’t stop loving my cranky son in law”
—————————–
“Another New Year vow, in advance, old plum!”
“Reducing blabs, Gem?”
“No more lying”
“OMG! All these years you were lying! What a fool I was to give my precious baby to a lire! I’m taking her back”
“Sorry, senior! You can’t do that. Once bonded in marriage, bonded for ever!”
“Gone those days. Now, If you cough or yarn or sneeze or snore violently, your honey quits”
“Ok. If the honey cough or yarn or sneeze or snore violently, I quit”
“Never, my Gem! You go to kitchen and complete her chores!”
“That is bondage, plum!”
“Gone that meaning. Now it is called ‘Partnership’
You can’t break a ship and escape. You have to sink deep down, along with it, if it cracks!”
—————————-
“Ammalu, when your mom praised me yesterday, that I’m the best son in law in the world I was really flattered. How is it that, not once did my mom, say the same about you?”
“She knew I won’t get flattered”
“So, you mean that your mom didn’t really mean what she said?”
“SP, I just don’t know between you two, whom to trust, whom not to trust. Each seems to overtake the other in shrewdness. It is better, you deal direct with her and let she deal direct with you”
————————————
“Please buy a pack of coffee powder, while retuning home in the evening, SP”
“Coffee shop is closed today, Ammalu”
“A pack of Red Label tea from Chettiar Shop?”
“Kerala Sarkar has banned Tea, Ammalu”
“At least a can of beer? To pour on my head for the blunder of marrying you. Has the Kerala Sarkar banned that too?”
“Banned first, then relaxed. I can get beer but not to pour on your head. Water for washing off blunders and beer for dashing against dullness”
“Stay back home. No more evening walks”
————————————-
“SP, new place, new people. Be careful”
“Keep a watch on the wallet in my pocket or iPad in my hand?”
“On words coming out of your mouth”
———————————-
“Lord Krishna was lucky. How many women, he had!”
“You can also have, if you could perform at least one miracle Krishna could”
“I can. Show me a Poothana with a poisonous breast; I will suck her life. Show me a multi hooded poisonous snake; I will conquer him. Show me a —-”
“Wait a minute please. I can’t show you any of those supernatural beings. But, I see before me, a girl, taking bath, in the village pond, right across our house. You have to pick up her clothes and place a foot away. I’m not asking you to climb the tree and play flute, as Krishna did. Do this simple job, very simple job and walk away with that girl. Guaranteed”
—————–
“Have you seen a 1000 rupee note, Ammalu?”
“No”
“Five hundred rupees note?”
“No”
Two hundred rupee notes?”
“Yes”
“Ha, ha, Ammalu! There are no genuine two hundred rupee notes”
“I don’t know whether those are genuine or fakes. Yesterday, mom showed me a bundle of such notes and mentioned, you gave to her to pay back a lone from her”
—————————
“Your mom seems to have some misunderstanding about me. Why don’t you tell her that I’m an innocent man”
“I did tell her, but she is not convinced”
“Tell her I’m child- like; I know nothing”
“I told her”
“What did she say?”
“She yelled at me”
“Yelling is OK. All old women do that. You also do that. Tell me what she said”
“She asked me a question. I don’t want to tell you what that question was. Please don’t compel me”
“Please, please Ammalu. Tell me what that question was”
“This was that question: ‘Aren’t you ashamed to tell me, after getting four children from him, that your husband is child like and he doesn’t know anything?”
-
Ammalu is always right
”just now, I took a vow not to tell a single lie to you, Ammalu”“Why to me alone. You should never lie to anyone in the world”“But you are my world, Ammalu!”“fut goes your vow within 40 seconds”——————————————————————————————————-I’m getting a feeling that I’m not getting due respect in this house, Ammalu””Good. You are getting a ‘feeling’, if not ‘respect’. Something is better than nothing”
“Stop that stupid sarcasm. I’m serious”
“Sorry, SP. I too have become serious. That is why I wonder, why you are not getting respect, when I’m getting it, living under the same roof. Shall I suggest something? Consult a Vasthu expert and shift a door or window”
“It is YOU, I have to change. It is YOU, I have to shift”
“Then, change me, shift me. Before doing that, consult a Matrimonial bureau or issue an ad. In the local edition of an All India Paper or an All India edition of a local paper for a fresh wife. But, do it soon, before ur eyesight turns poorer”
“YOU, YOU, YOU!”
“Sorry. I can’t do it. It is your second marriage, not mine. So, you have to advertise. But do it before your eyesight—–”
“WATER, WATER, WATER!”
“Oh, now I understood. It is water, that you want. Not respect. I’ll get it soon – in a big vessel”
“Pour a big anda, brass vessel full of water over my head! Let it cool. And do it fast, before it bursts of heat”
“I will SP. I will. Let me shut the door first so that you don’t escape”
“Why should I escape, my honey, when I get so much respect?”
“So, no complaints. Thank you. Bajji or pokkoda for the evening tea?”——————————————“I shall, if it will please you, Ammalu, change the name board in your name, affix your photo too and shift it to a more prominent place””You can do something better to please me, other than changing the name board”
“Change yourself to a normal husband, just like any other man”—————————————–“You can never claim on par status with me, Ammalu.
What is my knowledge, what is my popularity and madam, where do you fit in the picture?””I don’t fit in”
“Then, why did you sit, side by side, on the same bench, when we went for a medical check up, this morning”
“Oh, that was just to hold you, incase you shook and fall, before your knowledge or popularity or physician reached for your rescue”
———————————-
“Ammalu, I’m not saying this to under -grade your music. But the fact is I heard you better now, when I don’t have my hear- aids”
“The fact, SP, is I didn’t sing now. I was only doing some face exercise. It is time you start your music lessons from the basics”
——————————–
“Ammalu, a day will come when I will stage a darna, protest sitting, at our front gate or your mom’s gate. What will you do then?”
“We’ll serve you food at the gate and some water too for washing your hand and mouth”———————————“There is a spark of divinity in my eyes, say everybody. Do you too find any change in my eyes?”
“Yes. Your eyes have turned red. Either an infection or excess dose of Elaneer kozambu eye drops could be the reason, I thought”
“And the idea of divinity never struck you?”
“Divinity over night?”————————–“Ammalu, I’m a man of principles. I’m prepared to sacrifice anything in this world, my property, my wife, my life, for the the sake of my principles. What to do you live for, to eat and sleep?””To prepare tasty food and enjoy you eating, like a hungry child ”—————————“‘Blessed is he, whose wife waits in attendance, with a genuine smile, when he gets up from bed. Gentle and genuine smile, Ammalu, not senile or sterile”” I get it. In fact, this morning, I waited for an hour smiling by your bed . You didn’t wake up. So, reluctantly, went to attend to my chores. After completing work, went for a short nap and hurriedly got up hearing your yelling,’Ammalu, morning coffee!’. It was 12.00, then. Made fresh coffee, discarding the one made in the morning, wore fresh smile on face. It was just fresh then but turned into gentle and genuine, the moment you yelled, ‘Ammalu, serving coffee at lunch time?’”
—————————“Ammalu, if you think that I know nothing and you know everything- that is wrong””No, I don’t think so. I think opposite”
“That too is wrong. You know A to Z about me and I know nothing about you, even after living with you for fifty long years”
“Oh, that is nothing. Nature’s Life -guard for we, swimmers”
“You mean to say, husbands don’t need it?”
“You don’t swim. You enjoy the fun watching from the bank”
————————————“If I’m not happy with what I possess, I prefer to go for a new one, instead of struggling with the existing one””You mean your Laptop?”
“Laptop or Head-top ; anything”
“Shall I look for a replacement for me, or you will do it”
“Don’t talk nonsense, Ammalu. I may get a dozen wives like you or even more charming, but I will never find another mother in law, as loving as your mom”
“OK, from tomorrow onwards, my mom is staying here”
“Ammalu, Unconditional apology for my blab. you are the best wife in the world. You possess me and not the other way. I stay here at your pleasure and not the other way”
“I’m your Laptop or Head-top?”
“My heart; my heartbeat”
“Not the other way?”
“There is only one way, here. That is your way”—————————–“Aren’t you ashamed to run to report to your mom, every time I open and close the bathroom door, Ammalu ?”
“Not every time. Only this morning I did, when you didn’t come out, after more than an hour”
“You were afraid that something would have happened to me?”
“No. I knew that nothing would happen to you . I also knew that you were writing a story or a poetry and your compositions will keep even Lord Yamaraj, at a safe distance.
The coffee I made for you was getting cold and I wanted my mom to send some fresh coffee powder, as my stock was over”
——————————-“If a man lives in 85 or 90, he lived in 15 or 55”
“Wah, what a knowledge! What an expression!.I love you for that single sentence, SP””Thank you, Ammalu. I love you for understanding me, my words”
———————–
“SP Sir, what is happening? I hear you singing MAriyamma songs. Seems to be on cloud nine?”
“Yes. The women pensioners have invited me for the Mariamman festival”
“That will be awesome! I too will be coming with you”
“Why you, Ammalu? Are you a pensioner?”
“I’m not. But I need to be there with a vessel filled with turmeric water to pour on your head, if purely in religious ecstasy, overjoyed in meeting your friends, you sing, dance and utter some purely holistic predictions”
“But if my friends get elated and excited in ecstasy?”
“Don’t worry. I will be carrying a stick and bunches of neem leaves to slap on them and draw them back to normalcy”
“But, my angel from an undiplomatic Heaven, why this trouble for you in your old age?”
“No trouble. Just performing my duty. No woman pensioner should, even think of inviting you in future, for any function, any festival, without my company”
—————————-
Who is that girl in the black and white photo, with thick lips, thin chin and scary look, Ammalu? You or your mom?”
“Ammini. Her mother gave the photo to my mom”
“I thought so. The eyes are glistening, the body shape is ideal and hands are long and falling lazily”
“Postpone the cataract surgery and discard your spectacle. There is a miraculous, instant improvement in your eye sight”
—————————-
“How was it that no one in your family learned English, Ammalu?
“There was no necessity as Facebook was available in vernaculars at much cheaper rates”
————————” This is a promise: In my next birth, I’ll pay back all your dues and serve you like an animal, Ammalu”” I w’ll write off all your dues now itself. Just switch of the stove; the cooker is roaring”.”Give me two minutes. The new couple in the opposite house are quarreling; Let me see who wins”” Whoever wins you gain. Let the stove wait till our next birth”———————————————————————————–—-
“Ammalu, go from corner to corner of our village and ask every man, woman and child you come across, whether I’m a good man or not. If every one say,’yes’, then only give me a written certificate””Have the certificate, right away”
“That means you have absolute faith in my honesty. Thank you”
“Yes, it means exactly that. But when I go around the village and enquire about you, in case a man or a woman or a child, tells half heartedly your honesty is to be tested, then I won’t be coming back to the house. So, better have the certificate first”
“After issuing the certificate, why enquire at all, Ammalu?”
“To obey you. Amma had told me, ‘obey him’”
“Now I’m asking you not to go. Why don’t you obey me ?”
“Amma had also said, ‘obeying him too much is not too good for you’.
“Amma said this, Amma said that; then what I’m I here for?”
“To entertain me with such pranks , bluffs, half truths and absolutely nonsensical suggestions asking me to go around the village to find about you”
“So, I’m an entertainer for you?”
“No, husband”
“Thank you, dear”
“Thank you, SP. Give back the certificate. I can use it next time”—————————– -
Kuppuswamy, my friend
NRI boys do remove their shirts.
Many trains halted and passed through Olavakkode Junction, day and night, more during night.
Seated on the veranda of my house, by the station road, I used to watch the movement of people. From the Kalpathy villages, they used to come to receive or see off their relatives. Some of them were bare- chested and none took notice of that.
That was a Muslim majority area and many used to roam about, in the town, bare-chested, wearing lungies. None noticed them.
I too on many occasions, as a boy, had moved in towns
and villages in Kerala, and compulsorily inside temples, bare chested . None noticed.
Here, in America, I can’t have that ‘freedom’, even during peak summer.
Generally, the people here, don’t bother about others in the streets. But, if I venture to go out, with no shirt on, I will be noticed. And, my children will certainly notice and buy the best seat in the next available flight to Hyderabad, drop me in the airport, give a warm hug and see me off with a fitting farewell. “Take care, Dad!”
I won’t give that chance to my dear wards. Hence, stand here on the steps, well within a building , well-wrapped. This adequate dress is to protect me from the biting Boston winter.
An old friend of mine driver Marimuthu, used to attend weddings, in full suit and tie , during peak summer, in Chennai!
“Why, Muthu?” I enquired.
“JanvAs MAppillai Sir soodu thangama kelampittarnna, nAn poi ankae ninnukalAm illae?”
If the bridegroom, unable to bear the heat, moves out, I can go and stand in his place, right?”. He was joking. But I’m not. Wedding In May, in Chennai, used to be a punishment.
Now perhaps not so. The halls are air conditioned. The wedding fire is nourished for shorter duration, as Vadyar is busy, bridegroom, is working from home ( means he is on duty). understandable.
I attended a wedding, sometime ago, in Hyderabad. Peak summer. The NRI bridegroom was unable to sit on the floor. Understandable. He was a computer boy, good in his job. He got a chair. No one asked him to remove his shirt and so, he didn’t. They thought NRI boys never remove their shirts!
No grumble. But Kuppuswamy iyer, my friend, who had roamed bare- chested during college days, through the streets of Kalpathy, along with me, performed the kanyAdanam, in full suit and tie and hat!
Boy, I was stunned. I asked him, ” Kuppu, mad fellow, you could have at least removed the hat?’
“Your Pakakkadan budhy will never leave you” he chided me, “the bridegroom is from a sophisticated family”
Sad, my friend is no more now. He passed away, shortly after his daughter’s wedding.
I attended his last journey. There was only a white sheet to cover his body!
He was on his way to a non sophisticated family. Otherwise, he would have been in suit and tie. And a hat too, on his bald head!
P.S. Forgot to tell you. Kuppu’s last rites were performed by his son in law, who rushed from USA.
No one asked him to remove his shirt. He didn’t ask for a chair.
He sat on the dusty, ashy, wet cremation ground, bare chested!
NRI boys can sit on the ground .They do remove their shirt. I’m convinced.

MAmiyar Murukku
MAmiyar murukku.
‘Mappillai murukku’ – some of you would have heard. I heard it for the first time, when I stayed for a couple of days, soon after my wedding in my wife’s house at Thiruvananthapuram. For evening snack, I was served, after asking me to be seated facing the auspicious East, Avil aka beaten rice and poovan pazham. The Avil was hand pounded, retaining the aroma of bran, the brown coloured, nutritious outer layer of the rice grain. The poovan pazham was soft and honey -sweet, as to earn the merit of one of the selected neivedyams, food offer, to the divine child of Guruvayoor. That tasty combination was served on a tender plantain leaf, just removed from the backyard tree, which too contributed to the aroma to the already tasty food.
I loved the food. But, absorption capacity is not unlimited. So, reluctantly, I left a part, back on the leaf, when a close relative, Athai or aunt, taunted me: ‘konthae, MAppillai murukku vendAm- child, abandon the inner reservation of a fresh son in law’
I’m not happy with my translation of the word ‘murukku’ here, but I could not find a better words. Colloquial usages lose the essence and charm in translation.
Now, back to the title of this story. MAmiyar is mother in law. The ‘Murukku’ here, in this context, is not a behavior. It is a food item- that hand-twisted circle, rice powder based, placed prominently on the wedding podium, kalyAna Panthal, along with sweet balls of laddus and sweet rectangles of Mysorepaks . it is also called kaimurukku, to emphasize the importance of Kai or hand, in its production.
Last year, before leaving for America, I visited my mAmiyar, mother in law, at her home in Thiruvananthapuram, the same good old lady, who served me avil and poovan pazham, long back. She had become old, naturally. For good or bad, I’m deep in my conviction that I don’t age, though all others do. But God is great. You can dupe your wife, you can dude even your mother in law, but never God. So, His Highness, Lord Sreekanteswaran, who could watch the happening in my mother in law’s house, just by a peep through the window, put a forceful break to my wicked thought that my mother in law had aged but not me.
This was what happened.
The gracious old lady, despite her physical disabilities due to old age, had prepared hand- twisted Murukku for her son in law. I’m sure that her weak fingers would have terribly protested, resisting to twist and turn to her commands. But twisting and turning are unavoidable for the simple rice flour paste, to become a mouth – watering eatable.
She served me a few pieces, on a plantain leaf. Chewing old stories, intermittently smiling, laughing and clearing the moistness from eyes, I bit merrily the circular charisma and consumed the first murukku. The moment, overwhelmingly proud of my strong teeth, I bit the second murukku. ‘Tup’ cracked a tooth, got dislocated from its time tested base and fell on the leaf. The honorable lady, whose ears are left with only ornamental role, could clearly hear the sound of the tooth – crack and more surprisingly, her dwindling eyes could clearly see the dented tooth, lying helplessly, amongst the murukku pieces on the plantain leaf.
With the speed of an eagle, flashing from the sky and swooping on a dove on the land, she picked up not only my broken tooth, but the remaining pieces of murukku too.
I looked at her pathetically, like a baby whose mouth feeding was abruptly stopped and asked, ‘ why murukku?’
‘Just to save your remaining weak teeth,” she said.
I turned my neck and looked at our neighbour, Lord Sreekanteswaran and asked,
” a punishment for my false notion that aging is only for others or for leaving unconsumed some avil and pazham, decades ago?”
As usual, He didn’t respond. His divine mount did.
‘For both,’ he said and shook his broad ears, as if to say, ‘take it light’.

Gone is gone
Gone is gone!
“Are you a diabetic?”
“Yes”
“BP ?”
“High”
“Leg pain?”
“There are multiple plains. Not leg alone”
“Where is your wife?”
“Escaped”
“Means?”
“She left me”
“Abandoned you?”
“A new word in the dictionary?”
“What I wanted to know was whether she went alone or with some one”
“How does it matter, whether she went alone or with a doz. people?”
“Your children?”
“Far away”
“Your home?”
“That temple veranda”
“Cash?”
“Enough to buy a chAi and pokkoda”
“How, on the earth, are you so happy, with no wealth, no health, no shelter, no kin around?”
“I’m alive!”
“I too am alive and I have everything which you lack.”
“Who said you are alive?”
“See my hands, see my legs! These are moving.”
“Movement of limbs don’t make one alive. One should feel that he is alive. You are not alive”
“How?”
“If you were alive, you would be feeling the life; the life of yours and that of trees, birds, cattle and clouds and enjoy every moment, every movement of the world, like me. You don’t need a gym- tuned body or a gorgeous woman or mansion to enjoy life.
God didn’t guarantee any of those, when He sent you here.
Instead of enjoying the silence of the sky and vibrations of the Earth, you were wasting your time in enquiring whether my wife escaped with one or ten men. In what way are you concerned as long as you are not one among those ten? Are you going to buy a flat for me in the heart of the town or in a remote village? Are you going to order medicines for a month or a week from Rogam medicals? Or you going to buy one plate of extra pokkoda for my evening Chai?”
“Sir, I’m sorry. Your BP is abnormally high. Take care”
“You take care. Your limbs are shaking”
“Oh, my God, they are shaking! Will they slip and fall from my body? What do I do
now? Come along with you and take shelter on the temple veranda and share your pokkoda and chAi?”
“No, speed up home and see whether your wife is there or had eloped with someone”
Y”Sir, with one or a dozen?”
“In what way are you concerned? Gone is gone!”
“Is that the way to enjoy life? Gone is gone?”
“One of the ways”
