  • Not to you, not to you, Death.

Why did you touch me, if  don’t want to hug me ?
Not to you, not to you, Death.
    ———————————————————————————————————
I long for the sun when it rains ; I long for the rains when it shines. But, whether it shines or rains, I long for you, my moon light !

  • you alone, you alone, Neelakanta!

The opposite forces, churned the ocean in me,
Many were there to  share the flowers and fortunes
    But to absorb the poison,
    you alone, you alone,  Neelakanta!

  • Missed honey-moon

‘Enna sollarai,? What you say?,’ he turned his back and sought permission from his wife, as all husbands do always.
’you take care of konthai’,  Mami standing tall, with strong hands, huge body and big face looked sternly at her husband,” no, let me go and sit there for some time and enjoy the fun of the youngsters. There is life there.”
“You spent five decades together with me, with no life in me?”  Mama could have asked. But he didn’t. My esteem of him did not get lowered by an inch, by his silence. More you age, wiser you become, as I have..
“Why don’t you bring konthai too?”  I suggested anxious to have the family’s company.  Konthai also came, along with his father. He was not a kid, as I expected. A middle aged man with robust body likes his mom, and receding hair and proceeding abdomen – he became my friend at the very sight as I liked his benign, care-free smile. There was an air of informality around him.
“Who in this group are the brides and grooms?” inquired the old man, a very valid question, not unexpected. No sooner I introduced the two couples, came the shot, “to which place are they going for honey-moon?’. Too early to ask that question, I thought, as the marriage was yet to take place.
“A brilliant sixer”, commented my son in law, turning his head towards the window.
“Ada kema!” was the comment of Nair, my friend, assuming mama was a Malayalam-illiterate.
“Here you go,” yelled a niece, unable to control her instant jubilation.
“Mama, the wedding is yet to take place,” I replied, as politely as I could, “let them go wherever they want to. It is none of my business, eh?”  That last sentence was to say,’ It is none of your business too’
“Athu enna kelvi ? what a stupid question to ask “ Mami admonished her husband and added facing me, “every time he greets a newly wedded couple, he asks that stupid question” . She emphasized on the word ‘stupid’, which was not necessary, I thought..
“But here, mami, the wedding is yet to take place” reminded my smart young niece.
“I am sorry for Appa’s query”, the son remarked in an apologetic tone. “His desire for his own honey moon remains unfulfilled as on today. The couple spent their first night and several nights afterwards at home and never in a hotel, when he got married but still, prompted by his friends, he put forward the idea, overcoming his shyness, to his in-laws, which was outright rejected, not by them but by his mom.
“Nothing doing, my son should spend his first wedding night in my house only. That has been the practice. The first seed should germinate and the first shoot should develop from our ancestral house, not in a holiday resort or a hotel” And once the lady of the house took a decision then and now, that was final.’
His father was enjoying every word of his son and suddenly I developed sympathy and love for that old man. He was really beaming. What is there to get excited about one’s wedding, after the wedding and anyway after fifty or so years? Something is abnormal with this man, I thought for a moment, though overtly he looked normal. I have hardly seen any husband for a few decades beaming when a mention of their wedding is made.  His wife, busy playing with the kids, hardly appeared to have followed the conversation. He looked at her and alternately at me as if to say how lucky he was, to have a wife like her. How many husbands can, at his age, inwardly have that joy and satisfaction?
‘Many, including me’, I hear your saying. I know your wife is in the audible distance. I agree with you, as mine is also not far away.
“You should have celebrated his sixtieth birthday night as a honey moon,” I asked his son, “we do celebrate that day as a wedding anniversary of elders, right?’.
“We wanted to”, replied Konthai, “but my mother flatly refused. She was not prepared to spend a night with him in a hotel”
His mother turned and stared at me, as if it was I who wanted her to share a hotel room with her husband.
I liked that family. A contended husband, a serious- looking mother and an easy-going son.
“Come for the wedding, with your family”’. I invited the father and gave him the date and location particulars. That was not convenient as there was some important work to be addressed to.
“Then, come for the reception in Hyderabad’ I pleaded.”
“‘What date is that?”  He asked.
“July 17th at Hotel Suprabhath, in Habsiguda”
“’July 17th is my dad’s 70th birthday”’ commented Konthai, enthusiasm bubbling in his word.
“Excellent”, I almost jumped from my seat. “We will celebrate your parents honey moon in Hotel Suprabhat. I have booked a dozen rooms; a double bed room goes to them’
Mama was excited; mami had no objection. The son too was willing.
“I will be back, I will be back in time to Hyderabad”, the senior yelled like a kid invited for a magic show, nodded his head to emphasize his willingness and flashed a happy smile, while alighting at the Trichur Station, on the way to our destination..
“He is excited about the party”’ I commended. “No, about the honey-moon’, remarked Nair.
“You are a cruel man and I dislike you for that comment”’ I told him. “That is not the way to talk about a man of your father’s age”’
“My father too didn’t have a honey-moon but he never spent his life moaning for that”’ Nair shot back.
July 17th, we waited for them. They didn’t turn up. ‘Heavy rains.’ I tried to console myself, finding a genuine reason for their absence.
But the reason was not that. Mama was not alive on July 17th.
“Appa passed away in sleep, two days before your function’.  His son called to convey the sad news,”he hadn’t been all that normal mentally and despite his dementia problems, hadn’t forgotten his missed honey- moon and was, in fact looking forward for the July 17 party”.’

  • A 50:50 joke

30 AC- 2 tickets and 29 passengers, were we. The tickets were  booked by two people, while I was in US and each booked a ticket for me, one in the name of Sivasubramanian and the other S Perinkulam. We didn’t cancel the extra ticket as Meghana wanted to keep that birth to accommodate the luggage.
The TT was an elderly man and invariably as all elderly men are, were allergic to the noise and dance from the group and decided to do a through check. A duty- conscious officer he was no doubt, did a head -count by identifying every name, and detected one extra name.
    ‘Where is sperinkulam?.’ He inquired.
‘ Ikkada unnanandi, Here I am’
    ‘Your identity please.’
    That was shown.
‘But this is Sivasubramanian and I want the identity of sperinkulam’- His voice became course and it was natural for an officer of his stature.  I could have told him the fact that there was an extra birth with us and thus closed the matter. Instead, I asked him, ‘If not by name, can’t you identify by the picture?’ That was unnecessary and too often I do unnecessary things, which perhaps keep me active and joyful.
‘Sir, where is comparison ?, ‘ he raised his voice, looking at my lovely( for me) picture ‘ the photo shows a human face!’ ha,ha,ha–he laughed . We both agree on that point and I too joined and laughed ha,ha, ha, heart-full.. My children, busy in their merry making didn’t notice the ticket examiner or hear his joke, though pretty and thank God for that.
Screwing my face with both his eyes, he tried to load my brain with bare facts, which were not very pleasant.
‘ You are traveling without a valid identity and even without a valid ticket. You are not Sivasubramanian and I have already ticked that name in his chart. He doesn’t exist, as far as I am concerned.’
I was shocked . ‘ I do exist and I am Sivasubramanian,’  I wanted to shout but fearing that would throw cold water on my family rejoicing, I pulled him towards me and whispered into his ears, ‘ damn with your dirty chart. I am alive, kicking and can kick your —-too.”
Then releasing his collar, made him to sit comfortably in my seat, presented him first with a broad smile and then a welcome proposal.
‘Sir okka pani chestham- we will do like this. There is an extra birth with us; I surrender that. You allot it to someone and we share 50:50 ‘
If I say,  he accepted my proposal, you will try to find his name and we both will land in trouble.. So, just enjoy this 50:50 Joke.

I am now totally and properly confused. Who is Sivasubramanian and who is sperinkulam?
Or are they both imaginary characters? Can any one in T-P clarify, other than Sivasubramaniyan
or sperinkulam-oh! again I am confused. How some one can clarify if he does not exist.
But I must admit the story is fantastic.

  • A volley of valid points

I never had any problem with my tenants. In fact, I had fun with them and Vikram stands head and shoulder above others.

He owned a retail outlet for a popular product with an established brand name when I was the area manager of that company. I admired his salesmanship in selling products, but as his expertise was explicit better in selling the products of our competitors, which gave him a better margin of profit, I had to recommend his removal
He had two school- going kids . I accommodated the family in the side portion of my house for an affordable rent. Ideal tenants were they, initially. No complaints about the facilities provided, no delay in rent-remittance .’ good morning Sir, good evening sir, thank you sir’- in abundance .

After a couple of months, the rent remittance was progressively delayed and finally fully stopped. Vikram started borrowing amounts, from me, in two digits initially and seeing my leniency, the digits expanded.

” Go and ask uncle” I could hear his command to his children when they approached their dad for the school fees, one morning. Obediently, they came and I paid . No question asked. After all, children’s education should not suffer.

Vikram thanked me profusely. ” You are great Sir, They are your children” His voice was shaky with emotion.

” Sorry, Vikram” I gave vent to my hidden anger, “they are not my children; they are yours and it is your responsibility to take care of their need. You are an efficient sales-man and you can sell any product under the sun. You are not making any efforts to work and earn.”

“I will, from now on, sir.” enthusiasm bubbled in his reply and face, ” lend me a few lacks, After all I am your son.”

” You have got wrong there, Vikram. You are not my son and had you been one, I would have thrown you out of my house for borrowing money from others”. I screamed at him and he moved away, turning his neck to make sure that my eyes were moist for not treating him as my son.

Vikram, like an obedient son, had started working hard to make money, even without my help. That was clear to me, when after a couple of weeks my friends started inquiring, ” Why are you selling your house?”

    .
”Selling, my house? ” I was taken back. ” Who told you?”

“Your tenant is going around with some papers and canvassing for selling your property” was their cool reply.

I returned home fuming and entered his house, shouting, ” get out, you wretched man, before I throw you out of my house”. He was not there. His wife, an honorable lady, begged for my pardon, falling at my feet, “You are our God, sir. He has gone out to sell my mangalsutram and will be back now to settle your dues”.

“That is OK”.  My honey-soaked words brought out the hidden stars in her eyes . I am not an abominable animal to be so cruel, to extract my dues out of the mortgage of the mangalsutram of a fully pregnant woman.

Her labor- pain started that night. Vikram came and asked for monetary help. If not you who else will help her sir ? ” He pleaded , ” after all she is like your wife .”

I gave him money but not before making my dislike of his remark, ” She is not like my wife and never utter such stupid words”.

” Arrange a taxi, sir.” Vikram pleaded. ” I wanted to prepare some coffee and pack her clothes for the hospital”

I called a taxi and helped his wife to board it and assured that in her absence, I would look after her kids.

After an hour the taxi man returned and demanded to and fro fare. ” Sir asked me to collect from you”.

“Fool, which taxi driver has allowed the passenger to get away without paying the fare ” I yelled at him. ” After all, it was his wife and not me , whom you transported to the maternity hospital.”

“But Sir, It was you who called me and not  that Sir or his wife” . That too was a valid point.

I had to pay the full amount . You know how taxi drivers could be nasty and after all, he had a valid point. But as an experienced administrator, I had the wisdom to call Vikram and confirm that he had not paid a pie to the taxi driver.

‘” Sir, you lent me cash only for the hospital expenses and not for the taxi”. Oh, He had a valid argument again.

When his wife returned home with a 3kg bundle of joy, she announced that she had decided to seek a divorce from her ‘good-for-nothing ” husband.

‘Don’t be in a hurry, young lady” I advised her, ” and don’t call your husband as a ‘good-for-nothing one. He has after all, fathered your three kids.

But she was not prepared to relent. “No, uncle. He has no more place in my heart and bedroom. Which wife will tolerate a man who is incapable of providing taxi fare to take her to the maternity ward ? “

No doubt, that is a very valid point.
    .
“But where will you go with these three kids, lady?” I enquired sympathy and care surging from each word.

” I will come to your house, uncle.” Her voice was unfaltering, ” where else will I go?”

“Sometime we commit blunders to establish our honesty”. I opened up my heart to Ammalu . ” I should have allowed Vikram to sell the non-branded products under the banner of the popular company “

“But the honorable lady has a valid point. Where else will she go ?” Ammalu chided me, smile and sarcasm submerging her anger.

  • We have never met before

“Your face looks very familiar to me; We have met somewhere?”

“I know about my face and I can assure you that we have never met.. This is my visit to this hamlet and I am sure that you have never crossed that river in the village corner”

“I am sure, you are Rangaswamy “

    ” Certainly not”

” I am sure, Ramaswamy is your son “
“I am not that sure, sir”
” No problem. Can I borrow your mobile, please? I want to make an urgent call.”
“I have no mobile with me, sir.”
” You are right; we have never met before.”

  • Everything is NEVER lost; something always remains.

If you are of my age but unlike me, exasperate everyone, every time you lose a shaky tooth or a shaving stick or any such silly things and moan, ” I have lost everything”, I feel sorry not for you but for me!Reason- you have ‘lost everything’, leaving nothing for me to grab.
If you are an youngster unlike me but still lament, “I have lost everything’, when, actually what you have lost is of no consequence, I will tell you: “My dear young man, everything is never lost. something always remains at the bottom of the vessel which can feed a hundred mouths. if God’s grace is on you, you will be able to locate that left over tiny part and build a castle out of it”
If you still continue with your, “I have lost everything” slogan, I will hand over a free ticket to Tirupathy along with a hundred rupee note and advice you to go to the abode of the Lord of seven hills, have a nice tonsure, mount the hills and cry, “Govinda, Govinda!”
If you retort, “going all the way that far to lose my hair ?”, I will grab that free ticket and currency note from your hand, raise my head and hands towards the sky and cry, “Govinda, Govinda!”.
You cannot change some people. The feeling of failure will be always remain with them. You may say , ‘something remains with them!’
And had you expected that I would have deposited the currency in God’s hundi, you have not understood me. I place only my heart at the feet of my Lord and not money, which he has in plenty!
Success of the ‘ Something is left ‘ story, again !

  • A valid reason indeed!

Shabari Express from Hyderabad to Thiruvananthapuram. B1 coach. Along with the wedding group of about 25 close relatives, I was proceeding to Ernakulam to perform the wedding of my second son Atchuth with Anjana. Seated next to me is a senior citizen, scratching his head as if to get rid of the illegal immigrants invaded into his vacant place on the top.
” I am fed up with my life,” he grumbles, gesticulating at me as if I am the cause for his agony.
“You mean sir, that you have more than one wife?” I enquirers,  sympathy dripping from every word at the suffering of a fellow human being.
“More than one wife ? ” he fumes looking at the lady sitting peacefully opposite to him, as if he wants to throttle her for extending her neck towards him long back, to receive the garland.
” How divine she looks ?” I complement his wife, sitting silently enjoying the fun of her grand children’s play”  and add unnecessarily, “what a perfect match ? ”
” Perfect match ?” my neighbor folds his fingers preparing to punch his wife’s nose or mine . She now opens her coffee flask, pours coffee into a brass tumbler and passes it on to him.
Enjoying the hot coffee, the old man looks at her affectionately and then, turning towards me, comments, ” I told you that I am fed up with my life.”
That surprises me. I  ask, ” you did say so sir, but that was before you had your coffee. And if I’m not intruding into your personal life, may I know the reason for your discontentment?  ”
” Look at my head, ” he makes a quick circle over that shining space  and moans, ” not a single white hair and if I may share a secret, there is, in fact,  no hair at all”
” There is no secret in it, if I can trust my eyes” I add, “but that is part of your aging process in which you have no say, I guess ”
“And this wife of forty years – she sits there like a dummy without saying a word ” That was his second complaint.
His son quietly nears and gives his dad a shot of insulin and moves away gently patting the old man’s back.
” And see this son of mine moving around shamelessly exposing his  legs and see there, his wife laughing and playing with kids unmindful of the co-passengers’ piercing eyes , at her. ” The father complains again.
His daughter in law approaches him smiling and serves  food. “Amma should not have given you coffee. I’m worried that might dampen your appetite.”  She comments, waits there patiently till he finishes eating, enjoying every handful , and then leading him to the washbasin, brings him back to his seat, holding his hand and wipes it with a napkin. She then, rushes back towards the children to play and laugh loudly.
” Are you cool now sir, can we talk ? ” I inquire politely.
” What else were you doing all along?”  He retorts with a harsh look and continues, ” go ahead. I love talking to less intelligent fellow beings”
“That reveals the depth of your scholarship and breadth of your humbleness ” I compliment him. ” I am sure that you are no more fed up with your life now.”
“Why do you say that ?” He is anxious to know.
“Because, you are able to fold your fingers to form a fist, bend your hip, squat on the floor, push your head below the seat to pull out your sandals, climb the narrow horizontal rods to reach the top birth and pull out a bag and pick up the newspaper, enjoy a sumptuous meal, admire your wife’s affection by glancing at her at times and sit in the same place for more than an hour without taking a nap. If a septuagenarian can perform all these tasks, what is there for him to complain in life? Your body is under your control, your brain is under your control, your wife, son and above all your daughter in law are all under your control at an age when generally people lose all controls and get controlled by outside agencies. What then, is there for you to complain and why should you get fed up with your life? ”
” What other reason do I need to have to complain when a nagger like you is occupying the seat next to mine ?” He questions with all the seriousness of a truth-seeker.
    A valid reason indeed!.

  • Never get scared of plastic dolls

When I came out of the college with a poor third class, partially due to a viral attack( which temporarily immobilized me ) and partially due to my poor preparation, I thought that was the end of the world. Believe me, the world didn’t end. I secured a good job and reached the top of the ladder.
When a personal calamity struck me
and shook my roots, trunk and branches, I had no doubt that everything was over for me.
Believe me, I did survive the tsunami and continue to row my boat.
While looking back, the monsters of the past ,who were about to swallow me then, looks like plastic dolls now.
Your son has missed the IIT exam. Relax. It is just the beginning of several such chances he is likely to miss and IIT or any other degrees alone do not assure success in life.
Some one close to you has passed away. Gain courage. Death is not a stranger to those who are born. As long as you are alive nothing else matters.
You have lost a vital part of your body but you are able to read this message. Smile. The sky, the sun, the clouds, the moon, the stars, the forest and your own body and your own family are visible to you and what else do you need?
Never get afraid of plastic dolls

    Madana Mohanashtakam
    ————————————

‘Madana mohanastakam’ is really ‘mohanam’, a lovely prayer song. You can sing the melody and forget yourself, forget the world around, while at home or in a lonely forest or under a moonlit sky or in the pouring rain.

In the ‘karaavalamba stotram’, we seek Narasimha’s hands for our rescue,  whereas in Madana Mohanashtakam, we seek Sree Krishna’s feet. The eight slokas are simple, sincere and a heart -to heart appeal to the Divinity.

“Anthimabaandhava ( slokam 4 )  -Bagavan, you are my last bandhu, the only remaining relative, my last resort, who will be with me till my last breath” – what a cordiality between the  Creator and the created!
